How It Happened
The 167th day of the year, Wednesday, June 15th. It was 75ºF at 8:53 am, 80ºF at 9:53 am. I started early, 4:35 am and had to drive out to the location I had decided on for this fashion story, East Los Angeles, a house that was being renovated. Over all it was an empty place with work being done so that worked for this production.
I had spoken with Maureen some four days prior as she had mentioned Sam and getting accreditation for his college. Sam, very handsome, a gentleman’s trait and style, a mystery in his eyes, soft spoken with a smile that breaks the lips to invite a person to feel comfortable, however, you could see his fierce charm and determination through his gaze, a dreamy powerful one. “Maureeeeen, get yourself here, book a ticket and get Sam here for this editorial story…” pause… “Oh Myyyy God Oh My God Oh MmmmY God, Amyn, are you kidding me, that will make Sam so happy and…. oh… you have no idea… okay, darling, Darling, I’ll call you back! OhmyGod!!” “Oh, Amyn, that helps me…you have no idea.” “Of course, I have no idea! Really, Maurrrrrreeeenn!”
Of course I had no idea how I was doing this, however, I wanted to do it, that was the only thought. How? Yes, I did have an idea which is why the house and the models. For styling, hair, makeup, I tossed the idea of Sam being in the pictures over to Melissa, the stylist I had booked for this editorial and to Veronica, the chef du maquillage, and Indo, the Hair designer. I wanted Sam’s Gaze! And, I asked Veronica to put Kajali (or Anjar as was referenced when it was put on me as a child — yes, true!) under Sam’s eyes, I wanted that pierce stare and charm to seduce the viewer especially with the colour of his eyes. That Lion, that Dove, that Fierce look. The shot is magnificent. Sam was enamoured. Alona, Stunning Breathless. I was enamoured.
In brief, guiding Sam was easy, he had not modelled, not this way for this kind of a fashion story, …and, where it was not staged and with a spontaneous burst. I often work in a manner to bring out that momentary split second capture. Directing Sam and Alona was superb!
Alona. I was thrilled to work with Alona, her beauty captivated me especially there is an innocence that tells a story in a mysterious feminine way that brings out that utter beauty of a Woman and Desire for you to understand your mind! That question that arises when looking through a camera body viewfinder as to how breath taking away from my chest this person is, …and, really, should I snap the trigger snapshot button or should I let my heart watch that story. The thing I noticed with Alona was when being set free as in direction but no direction I found a quizzical charm. She is incredibly sympathetic and so wonderful to talk to, listening intently. Her charm certainly shows you what I am saying here. Well, let’s see, of course, I had to get my picture taken with her as a behind the scene. If you look closely at Alona’s eyes, there is a mystery of a story of a far away place in a Kingdom where only Doves and Lions exist and there I have it.
I do not pay attention to mumbo jumbo photography parameters, f-stops stop you from yourself, and speeds should only be in your mind and mind’s eye as to how to get that moment and enjoy that capture. That rest of it is all bunk really — yes, really. There is no perfect exact exposure other than the exposure in your mind once you get the shot. There is no perfect colour. There is only the perfect emotion of the moment of the split second. It is the La Dolce Vita of yourself. Ah La Belle Vie!
Lighting: Profoto Acute 1200 pack I travel with easily. One head with another bouncing lightly somewhere. Nikon with Nikkor and all RAW NEF with the addition of NIK DXO after some Lightroom and Earl Gray Sage Tea. Photek umbrella for the rain though it never does, however I always use a sharp light. If there is a point for a soft-box then I make sure it says “get to the point of sharp” and not just because a soft box.
East Los Angeles was 80ºF Winds 14 mph WSW Dew Point 64.32. I was 37.2º or 98.96 Hot!
And, I loved photographing Alona and Sam. The Dove and The Lion.
